The First Sorrow
1. The prophecy of Simeon: “And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother: Behold this child is set for the fall and for the resurrection of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be contradicted; And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that out of many hearts thoughts may be revealed.” – Luke II, 34-35.
Dear Little hearts,
In this vale of tears our joys are so soon mingled with sorrow, it is always a reminder that we are pilgrims and that here we have no abiding city.
When Mary and Joseph took the infant Jesus to the temple to fulfil the Law, they must have known such joy… this special child, entrusted to them… the Messiah ! Like all new parents they must have shared laughter, and little words of preciousness that pass between parents, and yet so soon….
They hear the words ” A sword shall pierce your own heart”…. and as with us, when Mary hears these words they have a resonance in her own heart, she knows they are true…. they have been been spoken through a prophet of God… the old man Simeon.
And For Simeon too, he had waited all his life to glimpse the Messiah, to see his promise fulfilled…. his expectation may have been filled with expectation and joy, as for us too when we wait long for some perceived, expected joy, but when the moment comes he understands in the Spirit clearly, that there will be great suffering.
Mary so understands our sufferings and pain, there is no suffering , struggle or pain that we cannot entrust to her…
God gave us not only a Mother, a heavenly Queen , but he gave us a Mother with a heart full of compassion and love…. for she walked this Vale of tears too….. but ever with her eyes set upon the kingdom yet to come.
Love Mary!… She is loveable, faithful, constant. She will never let herself be outdone in love, but will ever remain supreme. If you are in danger, she will hasten to free you. If you are troubled, she will console you. If you are sick, she will bring you relief. If you are in need, she will help you. She does not look to see what kind of person you have been. She simply comes to a heart that wants to love her. She comes quickly and opens her merciful heart to you, embraces you and consoles and serves you. She will even be at hand to accompany you on the trip to eternity.
