Attention ~ FOCA ~ Explained ~ Mary M. Boyert, Pro-Life Director of the Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta

Dear Father Frank,
Pat Chivers mentioned that you have received some Emails warning that the Freedom of Choice Act is set to be signed January 21-22. This information is somewhat misleading and may cause people to think that our Fight-FOCA postcard campaign is not necessary. I put together the message below, and am sending it to people who contact me about it. Feel free to use this information to share with others. (What I’m doing is choosing the “Reply All” feature on me Email, so as many people as possible get the correct information. )
God bless,
Mary B.

Dear Friend,

Thank you for forwarding this message to me. While the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) is a very real threat (it is the most radical abortion legislation ever to be introduced in Congress), it is almost logistically impossible for Congress to pass it and send it on to President-elect Obama in the time frame mentioned in this message.
First, Congress has just gone back into session, and has not set an agenda for consideration of the bill – no testimony has been given, no votes have been scheduled. Also, if the bill were to pass before Inauguration Day, President Bush would most certainly veto it.
While I do not know the author of the original message, and I do not know where they obtained their information, I believe they may have been confused the possibility of President-elect Obama signing some “executive orders” that would overturn current pro-life policies. This is a real possibility, and could happen in the time mentioned. However, at this point, our contacts in Washington have not been able to determine further details on this.

Of course, prayer and fasting is definitely our most effective weapon, and whole heartedly support that part of the message, and hope that many people will participate in that effort.
As you may know, the Archdiocese of Atlanta is participating in the nationwide effort to mobilize the entire Catholic community to fight the Freedom of Choice Act through a fight-FOCA postcard campaign. Archbishop Gregory recently wrote a letter to each pastor, encouraging parish participation in the project. Anyone wishing to participate can contact their parish pro-life leader, or my office, for further details.
I would appreciate your forwarding my message to the person who sent you the original Email, and use the “Reply All” feature, to ensure that the correct information on FOCA is being shared with as many people as possible.
Thank you for your support.
For their lives,
P.S. For accurate information on the Freedom of Choice Act, please see, the web site of the National Committee for a Human Life Amendment (this is the public policy arm of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Pro-Life Secretariat) .
